Photobooth San Francisco
Remember a few weeks back when New Jersey and the rest of the north eastern part of the country was buried under a freak snow storm?  After falling on my ass in the driveway I got onto a plane and went to sunny San Francisco with my wife, Renee.
We were really excited to have our portraits taken in such a unique way.  In school you get your picture taken every year, but after that you probably only get a headshot for your driver’s license every few years… and that’s not exactly something you want to show other people.  Sure we all have iPhones with Hipstamatic and Instagram that produce similar looking results, but these portraits are not the results of digital filters or even a lomo camera.  Photobooth produces Tintype images, that is to say no film is used to develop your photo since it is shot directly to a metal plate.  This method was used mainly during the mid to late 1800’s.
Photobooth is located in the Mission District far from the usual tourist spots like Fisherman’s Wharf and Union Square but public transit will get you there from either of those places without any trouble.  Michael Shindler is the artist and photographer.  It’s worth a trip from anywhere.
