How well do you know your pizza? If you’ve only bothered with what chain restaurants are calling pizza then you might need to check out this guide to regional pizza styles over at Slice. This should get you started in the right direction, but this list of 20 something pizza styles is by no means complete. Within a region, every good pizza restaurant will make a style that will taste all their own. My hometown of Hazleton, PA must have had 20 pizzerias worth eating at when I was growing up. It’s getting harder and harder to find a place that can still make a real pizza! Maybe you can use that Christmas vacation to take a pizza road trip. In fact, I think I’ll visit Senape’s in Hazleton over the holidays to get my fix. They make Tavern style pizza… which isn’t on the list!
One more geek tip: Some “pizza” chains have something called pork topping listed next to sausage and pepperoni. Know what that is? The FDA has a limit of how much filler you can put in a meat, like sausage… so when there is more other crap in there than meat they can no longer call it sausage. Good luck with that pork topping covered in “cheese product.”
